What You Should Know About Moisture Damage on Your Roof

Did you know that one of the primary enemies of your roofing system is water? Moisture can damage various materials inside your home. It can pass through the exterior layers of your property and become trapped in your crawl space and the interior walls of your home. While this should not be overlooked, your shingle roof installers will discuss what moisture damage does to your roof.

  1. Moisture finds its way into a home’s attic, prompting the property at serious risk for significant structural defects. This leads to condensation and mold growth on the attic’s floor joists and your roof rafters. Wood rot will occur when this happens, compromising the stability of the plywood sheathing causing the other layers to separate.
  2. Excessive heat rising into your crawl space can cause your shingles to curl and shrink. This triggers cracks and splits on the roof, resulting in water seeping into your home. Flat roof installers remind that this can cause more trouble once left behind.
  3. According to roofers, moisture can cause corrosion in metal components. When your roof features are affected by decay, it won’t be long before they have to be renewed. This is why good metal roofing products are treated to resist this concern.
  4. Humidity leading to your layers’ rotting can cause coughing and itchy eyes when you breathe into molds. This would also trigger allergic reactions and critical asthma attacks.
  5. Excess moisture may also harm your electronics and gadgets that are susceptible to deterioration by condensation. Watch for high humidity and drastic temperature changes that may happen when bringing in electric appliances from your cold garage or basement.

Above all, it pays to visit the attic for signs of flooding such as mold, sunlight shining through the leaks, exposed seams and sagging roofs. Take note of how necessary preventive maintenance and routine inspections are.
